The Dover district occupies the eastern edge of Kent, encompassing the port town of Dover along with Deal, Sandwich and Walmer along the coast. With a population of around 116,000, the area serves as a major gateway between Britain and continental Europe through the Port of Dover, one of the busiest passenger ports in the world, handling ferry traffic to Calais and Dunkirk.
Dover Castle and the White Cliffs stand as the district's most recognisable landmarks. To the north, Sandwich holds distinction as one of the original Cinque Ports and remains one of England's best-preserved medieval towns. The district combines working port, coastal settlements and historic centres within a relatively compact area of east Kent.
Railway stations in the area include Dover Priory, Deal, Sandwich, Walmer, Martin Mill, Kearsney, Shepherdswell, Aylesham. High-speed services to London St Pancras run from Dover Priory.
The main roads serving Dover are the A2, A20, A256 and A258.
