Medway is the largest urban area in Kent, with a population of around 280,000. It comprises five towns — Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham — spread along the River Medway, together with the villages of the Hoo Peninsula. Medway is governed by Medway Council, a unitary authority that operates separately from Kent County Council.
The area has significant historical sites. Rochester contains a Norman castle and England's second-oldest cathedral. Chatham served as home to the Royal Navy's Chatham Dockyard for over 400 years; the former naval facility now operates as the Historic Dockyard visitor attraction, with the Universities at Medway campus located nearby.
Railway stations in the area include Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, Cuxton, Halling. High-speed services to London St Pancras call at Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham.
The main roads serving Medway are the M2, A2, A228 and A289.
The main hospital is Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, run by Medway NHS Foundation Trust, which has an emergency department.
