Gravesham is a borough in north-west Kent covering the Thames-side towns of Gravesend and Northfleet, along with villages including Meopham and Higham that extend south into the North Downs. The borough has a population of around 107,000.
Gravesend has served as the Thames pilots' station for centuries and is home to the world's oldest surviving cast-iron pier. The town has an unexpected connection to American history: Pocahontas died here in 1617 and is commemorated at St George's Church. Literary history is also present in the borough — Charles Dickens spent his final years at Gads Hill Place in Higham.
